Its ties to Central Florida stem from the broader reach of the Hearst media network, which played a role in shaping regional news and public discourse across the state. By dramatizing the life and myth of a powerful publishing figure whose influence extended into Florida’s journalistic history, Citizen Kane occupies a meaningful place in the cultural narrative connected to the region.
Cocoon stands as a touching and imaginative story about second chances, community, and the mystery of the unknown — themes that resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike. Filmed extensively in Florida, the production showcased the state’s unique locations and demonstrated its appeal as a cinematic setting. Its success helped strengthen Florida’s profile in the film industry during a period of expanding production activity, contributing to the momentum that supported filmmaking and media growth throughout the Central Florida region.
2 Fast 2 Furious may be set in Miami, but it’s easily the most “Florida” entry in the franchise — and Central Florida played a starring role. Some of the races were shot on Osceola Parkway and Semoran Boulevard, while interiors and stunt setups were built on soundstages at Universal Studios Florida. Even the big action finale leaned on local airstrips and wetlands to capture that sun-drenched Florida look. Over-the-top, colorful, and full of car culture fun, the movie feels inseparable from the state’s energy. For its Central Florida footprint and its lasting cult-favorite status, 2 Fast 2 Furious deserves the spotlight as one of the region’s most fun and iconic Hollywood productions.
The Waterboy is a fun addition to the Central Florida Hall of Fame because it turned our region into the backdrop for one of Adam Sandler’s most iconic comedies that is still enjoyed today. Though set in the Louisiana bayou, the production made extensive use of various Central Florida locations: Bobby Boucher’s rustic home was built at the Highbanks Road boat ramp in DeBary, the Mud Dogs’ practice field was staged at Spec Martin Municipal Stadium in DeLand, a frat party unfolded inside the Hunter Arms Bed & Breakfast in St. Cloud, and the climactic “Bourbon Bowl” was filmed at the Orlando Citrus Bowl, now Camping World Stadium.
Dumbo stands as one of Disney’s most emotionally resonant animated films, a simple yet powerful story about perseverance, belonging, and finding strength in what makes you different. While often remembered for its heart and iconic imagery, the film also has a direct and intentional connection to Central Florida that begins in its opening sequence. Dumbo opens at the circus’s winter quarters, explicitly identified as being located in Central Florida, where storks deliver babies to the performers, and Dumbo is born. This reflects the real-world tradition of traveling circuses using Florida as a seasonal home base, firmly placing the state at the starting point of Dumbo’s journey. In honoring Dumbo, we recognize both its lasting impact as a cornerstone of Disney animation and its meaningful ties to Florida, where its story quite literally begins.
To qualify, films must have been released to the public for a minimum of five years. The film must also have a significant connection to the Central Florida area. This connection can be through its use as a narrative setting, having shot the film on location in the region, or having been created by filmmakers from Central Florida.
The Critics Association of Central Florida is an organization of critics based in or around the Central Florida area. It consists of critics and journalists with a broad reach to a diverse and expansive audience. All members must review at least twenty-five new release films annually, with many reviewing hundreds of titles yearly.
